"Black Society Trilogy" (movie)

Three classic Takashi Miike movies - "Shinjuku Triad Society", "Rainy Dog", "Ley Lines". The films are three separate entities without storyline crossovers. Tomorowo Taguchi plays a prominent role in all three of the films, albeit as different characters.
"Shinjuku Triad Society" is one of the earliest examples of Miike's use of extreme violence and unusual characterization, two aspects he would become notorious for.
Rainy Dog is contains a fair amount of controversial material, the overall theme of the movie is place on the unlikely relationships formed between a hitman and his girlfriend/hooker and son.
"Ley Lines" is a story about a trio of Japanese youths of Chinese descent who escape their semi-rural upbringing and relocate to Shinjuku, Tokyo, where they befriend a troubled Shanghai prostitute and fall foul of a local crime syndicate. Like many of Miike's works, the film examines the underbelly of respectable Japanese society and the problems of assimilation faced by non-ethnically Japanese people in Japan.

"Adam And Joe Go Tokyo" was a series of eight episodes created for the BBC's then fledgling channel BBC Three (also airing in full on BBC One at a later timeslot as promotion for the new channel). It starred Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish of The Adam And Joe Show and aired between 30 May 2003 and 25 July 2003. The aim of the show was to offer an alternative insight into the lives of Tokyo's citizens, with the obligatory look at a number of gadgets and toys along the way. The show took the format of a mature Blue Peter outlining many pastimes of the average (or less so) Japanese person, everything from competitive speed eating to manga cosplay. Each episode would end with a Japanese band joining the show to perform.

"Takeshi's Castle" ("Fūun! Takeshi Jō?", literally "Operation! Takeshi Castle") was a Japanese game show that aired from 1986 to 1989 on the Tokyo Broadcasting System. It featured the esteemed Japanese actor Takeshi Kitano (also known as Beat Takeshi) as a count who owns a castle and sets up impossible challenges for players (or a volunteer army) to get to him. The show has become a cult television hit around the world. A special live "revival" was broadcast on April 2, 2005, for TBS's 50th anniversary celebrations.The original show involved between 100 and 142 contestants whom General Tani (Hayato Tani) "forced" into a series of silly physical challenges, eliminating many of the contestants. Each show finished with a "Final Showdown" in which Count Takeshi (Kitano) was faced by the remaining contestants. If the contestants hit the paper ring on Takeshi's cart with their water guns and break it (in later episodes replaced with lasers and a light-sensitive target), Takeshi's cart was deactivated, the castle was "taken" and the game "won". The player who stopped Takeshi won one million yen (which, at the time, was roughly equivalent to $8,000).
Takeshi originally wanted the show to be a 'live-action Super Mario game'. Early in the series the games and production values were low budget, but later series featured extensive landscaping of a fixed campus that included large man-made lakes and extensive permanent obstacles in Yokohama, Japan at a TBS-owned property. Takeshi decided the show should end while still at the height of popularity, which in Japanese television is common.
Each episode was filmed over the entire length of the day, with some challenges going well into the night.

Black Rain (Kuroi ame) is a 1989 Japanese film by director Shohei Imamura and based on the novel of the same name by Ibuse Masuji. The events are centered on the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
The main character, Yasuko, is a young woman of 20 when the bomb hits Hiroshima. She is contaminated by the Black Rain that falls after the bomb and is therefore refused for marriage several times because of health reasons, which causes her aunt and uncle who are her guardians to worry about her. The movie has two settings- the past, 1945 when the bomb was dropped, which is seen mostly through diary entries; and the present, 1950. Shizuma Shigematsu and his wife Shizuma Shigeko are the guardians and relatives of Yasuko in charge of taking care of her and making sure that she is happily married. However, one of the main themes of the movie which is illustrated many times over is the Buddhist belief that life is extremely full of suffering and all things are transient and the time of death is uncertain.

Polysics (or POLYSICS) is a Japanese new wave/Rock band from Tokyo, who personally dub their unique style as "technicolor pogo punk". The band started in 1997, but got their big break in 1998 at a concert in Tokyo. They create high energy music, fusing conventional guitar music, with synthesized and computer generated sound to create a unique mixture of punk and Synthpop, heavily inspired by the American bands Devo and The Tubes, and Japanese bands such as P-Model and Yellow Magic Orchestra. Their song lyrics often consist of Japanese, English, or just plain gibberish ("Moon Language"). The band has been noted for their extremely energetic live performances and their wild gimmicky outfits.In Hiroyuki's words, Polysics is inspired by "the spirit of Devo." Obvious references to Devo have been made in Polysics videos, and songs. The band has also covered "Jerking Back And Forth", "Social Fools", and "Secret Agent Man". Polysics have also creatively repurposed Devo and other New Wave/Punk material in their own original songs; for instance, in the song "Each Life Each End" from the album "Neu" they borrow the opening riff from the Devo song "Girl U Want" (along with a sample from "Love Missile F1-11" by Sigue Sigue Sputnik), and the lyrics are playfully paraphrased Engrish-style from Devo's "The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprise" and "Red Eye Express." Muzan-e (Bloody Ukiyo-e) is a subcategory of ukiyo-e prints depicting sex, gore and cruelty. The book is a homage to the famous 1866 series of the same name by artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, who is often names as the last great master of Ukiyo-e.
This book couples Maruo & Hanawa's contemporary prints with Yoshitoshi's 19th century Muzan-e, along with commentary on each piece in both English and Japanese. Some of my favorite prints include a few by Suehiro Maruo depicting Hitler & Eva in the bunker, Marc Bolan hanging from a helicopter toting a machine gun, and a scene inspired by Kazuo Umezu's Snake Girl manga! Hanawa's prints are more classically-informed, but the one of a woman strangling her lizard fetus (I know, WTF) is perhaps the most disturbing of the whole bunch.

It has been said that Hausu is like Beetlejuice as directed by Dario Argento. While this description is admittedly vague, it's hard to think of one that comes any closer to being satisfactory. Nobuhiko Obayashi's film defies comparison, seamlessly blending comedy, horror, and gorgeous visuals in a way that really must be witnessed in order to be appreciated.
The plot itself is nothing very new, and is a kind of supernatural take on Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians" -- Seven Japanese girls venture off to visit Grandmother in her big, spooky house, unaware that the house is in fact a demon that consumes virgins. One by one, they are killed in increasingly bizarre ways -- One is eaten by a piano, one by bedding, to go on would be giving away far too much.
But the story isn't really what's important here. Suffice it to say you have never seen a film like this before -- part satire, part camp, part coming-of-age story, merged with horror that is truly disturbing. The laughs are terrific and the scares are genuine; you may often feel unsure whether to laugh or shudder, and don't be surprised to catch yourself doing both at once. As if this weren't enough, add to that Obayashi's completely unique visual flair; not a single shot goes by without astounding imagery and effects.

Junji Ito is an author of Japanese horror manga. Upon graduation he trained as a dental technician, and until the early 1990s he juggled his dental career with his increasingly successful hobby — even after being selected as the winner of the prestigious Umezu prize for horror manga. The most common obsessions are with beauty, long hair, and beautiful girls, especially in his Tomie and Flesh-Colored Horror comic collections. For example: A girl's hair rebels against being cut off and runs off with her head; Girls deliberately catch a disease that makes them beautiful but then murder each other; a woman treats her skin with lotion so she can take it off and look at her muscles, but the skin dissolves and she tries to steal her sister's skin, etc.
His longest work, the three-volume Uzumaki, is about a town's obsession with spirals: people become variously fascinated with, terrified of, and consumed by the countless occurrences of the spiral in nature. Apart from the ghastly, convincingly-drawn deaths, the book projects an effective atmosphere of creeping fear as the town's inhabitants become less and less human, and more and more bizarre things begin to happen.
Before Uzumaki, Ito was best known for Tomie, a comic series about a beautiful, teasing and eternally youthful high school girl who inspires her stricken admirers to murder each other in fits of jealous rage. In 1998, during the horror boom that followed the success of Ringu, Tomie was adapted into a movie. Since Tomie, many of his works have been adapted for TV and the cinema.

Electric Eel Shock is a three-piece rock band, formed in Tokyo in the late 1990s. They first toured the United States in 1999 and have been touring the world ever since.At the end of 2002, an e-mail came out of the blue from a UK journalist, and would open a new phase for Electric Eel Shock. The band answered only one question raised in the e-mail: "Have you got any plans to come to the UK?" The reply was: "No! But we want. You get gig and we will come."
On January 16, 2003, Electric Eel Shock landed in London for five hastily arranged gigs. History was to repeat itself, with the five shows rapidly becoming twelve gigs in ten days. The band used the London Underground as their only form of transport. After this, they returned to the U.S. with the fanzine writer, James Hay as their new manager.
The band spent the rest of 2003 between the U.S. and Europe. Highlights included playing at both SXSW and CMJ festivals in America, headlining a stage at Roskilde Festival in Denmark, and supporting the Canadian band Danko Jones on a 40-date European tour. Somewhere in 2003 old friend Bob Slayer who had been successfully running their fanclub online became their tour manager and has been touring with the band ever since.
At the start of 2004 Electric Eel Shock went into the studio for the last of the Go sessions. Although these were still produced on a relatively low budget, and paid for by the band, this was the first time that they had used a studio as opposed to a practice room, kitchen or cupboard. They even had a sound engineer. The results, Go Europe / Go USA, were licensed around the world and the band went on a promotional tour that took in 25 countries and 27 European festivals.

Originally envisioned as a female-fronted Japanese heavy rock cover act called the Flowers by entertainer and "entrepreneur" Yuya Uchida, the Flower Travellin' Band would eventually chart their own course, becoming an underground influence on later metal acts, and counting one Julian Cope as a disciple. As the Flowers, (original) vocalist Remi Aso, guitarist Hideki Ishima, bassist Jun Kowzuki, and drummer Joji Wada released their debut, Challenge, in 1969. Consisting entirely of cover versions of Western pop/rock songs, the album got attention not necessarily from the music, but from the fact that the entire band was photographed in the nude on the cover.
Uchida and Aso left after the first album, leaving the band to reorganize with new vocalist Joe Yamanaka, and allowing it to explore more original and experimental avenues. Their first album as the Flower Travellin' Band, Anywhere, was released in 1970. The album featured five covers, including Muddy Waters' "Louisiana Blues" and Black Sabbath's "Black Sabbath." Again, the bandmembers appeared nude on the cover; the difference this time was that they were on motorcycles. Their first wholly "original"-based full-length, Satori, was released in 1971. Made in Japan was released in 1972, and the band's final album, a double live and studio set, Make Up, came out in 1973. By the end of their career, the Flower Travellin' Band were opening for prominent acts such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Recordings made before the band issued Anywhere would be released after the group's breakup in the mid-'70s under the title Kirikyogen, and 1995 would see a bootleg release of early material under the title From Pussies to Death in 10,000 Years of Freakout.

Deconstruction has been a Miike trademark for a long time, reaching early heights in films like Dead or Alive and its two sequels, and especially in the vastly underrated Deadly Outlaw: Rekka, which took a story about Riki Takeuchi blowing up a skyscraper and turned it into a marvellously intricate meditation on storytelling, performance and playacting.
There is a lot of meditation in Big Bang Love, Juvenile A too. It's perhaps one of Miike's most meditative films ever. Oddly, on the one hand, because it was produced by Hisao Maki, responsible for Silver, Family and several other of the most thick-headed turkeys in Miike's career. Not so oddly, on the other, because it was scripted by the great Masa Nakamura, writer of Dead or Alive 2, The Bird People in China, Young Thugs: Nostalgia and several other of the very finest films in that same career. The big bang of the title is also the clash between the two furthest extremes in Miike's filmography and the spectacle of its scattering stardust is one to behold.
Yes, but is it any good? This is a Takashi Miike film. It will make you wonder, curse, marvel, tremble, scratch your head, grow bored, and awaken rudely. Celebrate it."

Formed in March 2004... Released two mini-albums under Zankyo Records. 9mm Parabellum bullet's style mixes together the very best from all sorts of genres like Punk, metal, Emo and hardcore, resulting in a unique music that instantaneously became popular in various record stores. The band engaged in numerous live gigs at the same time, performing with many bands (RADWIMPS, etc) and gaining high praise for their explosive performances. In 2007 the four made appearances in the biggest festivals in Japan, such as "COUNTDOWN JAPAN '06/'07", "PUNKSPRING '07" (with the likes of NOFX, JIMMY EAT WORLD), proving their position as one of the elite Japanese rock bands.
9mm's February solo-tour tickets were sold out within 5 minutes and their April gigs in Tokyo and Osaka also were gone in mere minutes. Their latest release "The World e.p." (5/16/2007 limited release) ranked in at 10 on the Oricon Daily hit charts, a rare feat considering that the disc was a "preview" disc of a band that was yet to release from a major label. 9mm continued to create havoc with insane live performances during their 20-location nation wide tour that May. While securing appearances at major summer music festivals "SUMMER SONIC 07" (with Arctic Monkeys, KLAXONS, and more) and "SWEET LOVE SHOWER 2007", 9mm have completed their long-awaited major debut disc "Discommunication e.p."set for an October 10th release. 9mm Parabellum Bullet is projected as the Rock band that is most likely to break out this year.

Shamo (or gamecock) is a Japanese action manga with a dark theme. It was discontinued because "action comic" went out of business but it is now being serialized in Evening. It tells a story of a boy who killed his parents and turned himself into a cold-blooded martial artist. A film based on it is currently being filmed.
The two main characters are both criminals: the hero, Ryo, murdered his parents, and Ryo's sensei also tried to kill the Japanese Prime Minister using his karate skill.
This story was inspired by the Kobe Children's Serial Murder of 1997 that a 14-year-old "Youth A" ("Shonen A") killed and decapitated several children.

Glory to the Filmmaker! (Kantoku Banzai!) is a 2007 Japanese film written, directed, edited by the film's lead star Takeshi Kitano. In 2007 the Venice Film Festival introduced a new award named after the film, Kitano was also the first recipient of the Glory to the Filmmaker! award.
Kitano plays a hapless film director in search of a commercial hit, while suffering failure after failure as he tries out different genres.
The comedy, presented as an "ultra variety movie", crosses a broad range of genres common to Japanese film, in a similar fashion to Kitano's 1995 parody Getting Any?. Kitano described the film as "a cinematic extension of [his] manzai comedy routines that continues in much the same vein as [his] last feature."
